A Clutter Free Home

The basement has become a dumping ground for your outgrown clothing, unwanted rugs, and your child’s inflatable swimming pool. Holding on for dear life in your living room is your bookshelf, which is crammed to the gills with titles you haven’t had time to read. Next, you see your stale coffee machine sitting in the kitchen.

Every new season brings changes to your home. As the years pass, you will inevitably accumulate a collection of belongings. If you don’t have sufficient room to store all of these items, home looking more like a self storage space than a comfortable living space.

To avoid this, here are a few decluttering tips to keep your home from looking like a storage unit:

  1. More stuff does not mean more happiness
Most of us buy a lot of stuff because having more things makes us feel more in control. The reality is that having too many options to choose from sometimes has the opposite effect. When faced with too many options, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and stuck in a rut of self-blame when our choices turn out to be less than satisfying. Consider the mundane choices you have to make on a daily basis that weigh you down. Is it deciding which umbrella to use on a wet day, which dishes to use for dinner, or which book to read? Limit yourself to the top three or four choices, and let go of the rest.
  2. Start decluttering
Many people are drawn to the concept of downsizing their lives in favor of a more minimalist look. But when people think about owning less, they often feel overwhelmed, scared, and depressed. Learning to tidy your house doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems. You may find several methods and tactics online to help you get started on your decluttering journey. If you’re just getting started, giving yourself only five minutes a day can help you cover a lot of ground. Just think of how much stuff you’ll clear out of your life if you do this every day!
  3. “Read your room”
The accumulation of physical items in your house may be a sign of the need to unpack your thoughts as well. According to professional organizer
    Star Hansen
, “Clutter is an external demonstration of our internal storms. “Take stock of the items you’ve accumulated and try to remember when they became too much to handle. Does it coincide with a time in your life that you feel you haven’t really gotten over? That said, it’s OK if you come up with nothing. Sometimes, a pile of books is simply a pile of books.
  4. Change your mindset toward decluttering
If you want to live in a space that allows you to flourish, you need to make decluttering a priority rather than a burden. Get in the decluttering mindset by envisioning the result you want. Think about the motivations behind your desires. Getting rid of clutter in your house can have many positive effects, but you need to find your own personal motivation. Think about how much better your life would be if you had a clutter-free house.
  5. Store the stuff you can’t lose in self storage
It’s possible that after clearing up the clutter, you’ll run into new difficulties like, where should I put all these empty boxes? There are several ways to resolve this issue. You might donate them to a good cause, have a garage sale, or, if you’re too sentimental to part with certain items you “may need” someday, rent a storage unit. There are a variety of self-storage facilities that offer short-term storage, climate-controlled storage for fragile items, and different sizes of storage units to meet your needs.

Just thinking about decluttering makes you want to lie down and wait for the urge to clean up to pass. Indeed, decluttering takes a lot of time and dedication and is a challenge in itself.

Once you’ve conquered the obstacle, though, you may find that you’ve freed up a lot of space that may be put to better use: a new nursery, a craft room, a reading nook, or a home office. When you’ve completed your decluttering you can appreciate that you house looks like a home and not a storage unit.
