Setting Up Your Homeschooling Space

Like any other space, a homeschooling space is like your child’s own spot (for learning, of course). It’s crucial to keep this space organized. Here are some of its benefits.

• An organized homeschool space allows the student’s mind to focus on school work — and do chores or play away from this area.

It’s easy to have a dedicated space for homeschooling. What’s challenging is both arranging it and keeping it organized. How do you do this?

Homeschooling: Find a Designated Space

A space for your homeschooling should be bright, spacious, and safe. It’s where your child will be staying to study.

Evaluate what you and your child need. It should be accessible to an electric outlet where you’ll need to set up a computer, or a corner with good lighting and ventilation. If your child is a preschooler, you may need a room wide enough for any play-learning activities.

Before you store items, you need to evaluate what your child will be needing for this school year. You need to sort, select and store items before you can fully set up your homeschooling space.

Sort

Sort items in both the space where your homeschool activities will be conducted and the space where you will keep supplies and materials..

You can do this by taking note of the following:

• Items you need for your homeschool,
• Items you don’t need which can be thrown or given away,
• Items you can store and use again one day.

When sorting papers, check first if you have digital copies you can use instead. You don’t want to keep old used test papers if you can print new ones, right? Perhaps you can throw away old, recorded tests your child did.

You may also want to check books from last school year. If you see that you can use a book for this year’s schooling, then keep it. If not—yet you may need it later—store it.

Once you’ve sorted items, you can now select which items can be kept inside your storage unit.

For items you’ve selected to keep but won’t need for homeschooling, ask yourself if this is something you can place elsewhere inside the house, something that needs to be replaced, or something you don’t need for now.

Store

Prepare each item you will be storing inside your storage unit. For storing books, it’s best to examine if there are any biscuit crumbs or sweets stuck between the pages. It’s also best to store these in plastic, airtight containers. You should also disassemble any large furniture so you can store it more efficiently.

Add Furniture and Accessories

Once you’ve cleared the space, you can now add homeschooling furniture like desks and chairs, new shelves and book organizers, a rolling storage card, blackboard, and peg boards. Arrange these in a way that makes study easy.

Place the desk where there’s good lighting. Make sure the bookshelves are easy to reach. If your child is a preschooler, avoid using thumbtacks or objects that are harmful.

Always keep in mind your child’s safety and accessibility to items. Make sure that this furniture also encourages your child’s independence, like being able to select their own books from a low shelf.

Creating a Space for Learning

This school year, give your child a homeschooling space that encourages learning. You don’t have to complete everything in one go. You can start with basic items like a desk and a shelf. You can add the rest later on. What’s important is to provide your child with an organized space to study.
