To protect Christmas decorations, we’ve prepared this article for you. We’ll be sharing points that will help you understand more about the following:

  • Different types of Christmas decorations and what they’re made of,
  • Reasons why climate-controlled self storage is recommended,
  • and How to prepare your Christmas decorations yearly for storage.

Different Types of Christmas Decorations

There are a multitude of Christmas decorations. However, for this article, we’ll be sharing the most popular ones.

Why are they popular?

Since time immemorial, these Christmas items have been around. Some of these are even passed down from generation to generation. Despite how technology has provided us with new Christmas decorations, these remain the favorites.

Here are some of the most popular Christmas decorations.

Christmas Garland

A garland is an arrangement of flowers, leaves, and other accessories that are either hung or worn around the head. It includes flowers and leaves such as acorns, pine leaves, and poinsettias.

Christmas Wreath

Wreaths are similar to garlands except that it is rigid in a ring position. It’s usually hung from the door during holidays.

Candles

Candles are still popular despite having Christmas lights readily available to light up our homes and Christmas trees. Why?

Christmas candles represent the Star of Bethlehem, the star that guided the Magi to the manger where Jesus was born. Some Christians also consider this as a symbol of the “light of the world”, which is Jesus Christ.

These candles come in different widths and lengths and are usually colored red.

Christmas Tree Ornaments

Christmas ornaments always play a vital role in our Christmas experience. While these come in different sizes and shapes, ball ornaments (called baubles) remain very popular.

Hanging Christmas balls around the Christmas tree has been a tradition with every family, especially if there are children. These are made of glass, plastic, or metal.

Santa Claus and Christmas Gnomes

Santa Claus and Gnomes (or Christmas elves) are adorable figures that lighten up any Christmas scene. They can either come as dolls or as ceramic figurines.

Gnomes have been famous for outdoor decorations. However, during Christmas, small Gnome figurines are used as decorative pieces on shelves and as centerpieces.

Santa Claus, on the other hand, can either be a big figure displayed outside the house or, like gnomes, a small figurine displayed on shelves or as part of the centerpiece.

Christmas Star

Perched on top of trees is a Christmas star. Like the candle, it symbolizes the star of Bethlehem that appeared when Jesus was born.

Like Christmas balls, the star is made of either plastic or light metal.

Climate-Controlled Storage for Your Christmas Decorations

Regardless of the materials used to create the Christmas decoration, each piece should be stored where humidity and temperature are regulated. Climate-controlled storage is perfect for these.

Climate-controlled storage keeps your tree, garlands, and wreaths in pristine condition. It protects their boxes from infestations too.

Climate-controlled storage keeps your candles from melting or getting soft.

Climate-controlled storage keeps Christmas linens crisp and clean.

Climate-Controlled Self Storage How to Prepare Christmas Decorations for Storage

Make an inventory of all the decorations you will be storing. Take pictures and list each item. It’s also helpful to write down if they are heat sensitive or prone to moisture.

Store ornaments in specialized boxes. There are containers specifically designed to store baubles and other trinkets we hang on the tree. These have small boxes inside, which prevents them from bumping into each other and getting cracks.

Cover each Christmas decoration with layers of paper, especially if they are fragile. If you can’t get specialized containers, fill a box or plastic container with crumpled paper to avoid decorations (e.g. baubles and figurines) from bumping into each other.

Use lightweight dry-cleaning bags to cover your Christmas decorations. Other than paper, secure your ornaments more thoroughly with these bags.

Dispose of any Christmas lights that are not working before organizing them. This will minimize any potential entanglement caused by crammed Christmas lights inside a storage container.

Use plastic containers for Christmas lights and decorations that use plugs and batteries to function.

Wrap Christmas linens in acid-free tissue and cardboard to avoid oxidation which will discolor them during storage.

Wrap Christmas candles with old socks or cellophane to prevent them from getting scratched or transferring color. Remember that these are red and may melt. The color may end up sticking on your other ornaments if they’re not wrapped properly. It also helps it keep them from being melted and misshapen.

Carefully pack your decorations and organize the location of the boxes. Label each box and include a list so that you know what’s in each box.
